How can I make my eyes look wider?

Seriously, my eyes are really thin and it is the worst part of my face. I heard that using white eyeliner on the waterline makes them look wider, but then I also heard that it looks unrealistic when you do that. My sister told me you should use nude eyeliner instead, but I don't see how that can work.
