I have old Instant Messages saved in my archive. Can I find out the IP address of the sender?

I know WHO the sender was...it was an x-boyfriend. We ended amicably..no problems. I went into my archives, & wondered if it was possible to determine his IP address from these archives. Someone told me that it was very likely the IP address could not be determined.
